My name is Harry Clarke.

In the summer of 1988 I had a stroke which initially left me with severe Aphasia.

During my 3 months in hospital slowly recovering I began to realise that what had happened would probably change my life forever.

"Expert Patient"
If you live with a long-term illness, why not take control by becoming an Expert Patient. The Expert Patients Programme is a self-management course giving you the confidence, skills and knowledge to manage your condition better and be more in control of your live.

Some of us have done this course and found it very useful. There is a book and audio tape to accompany the course.

VOICE CARE

How to look after your voice


  • Drink plenty of water = 8 glasses a day
  • . Too much tea/coffee or Coca Cola (in other words too much caffeine) can be unhelpful as it can be dehydrating.
  • Steam inhalation keeping the vocal folds/larynx moist (humidified)
  • Talk quietly and gently. Do not wisper as this strains your voice

  • Plan a time in your day when you can rest your voice

  • Relax: especially your neck and shoulders

  • Don't shout or try force your voice

  • Coughing: instead try to swallow or to sip water

  • Don't smoke

  • Avoid noisy, smoky and dusty atmospheres

  • Don't drink spirits
