Aphasia therapy software Review - Part II

'Step by Step'

Specialist language software created by a speech and language therapist for adults who wish to work on their aphasic language, using a computer.

It is aimed at working on naming difficulties. The package is divided into 5 subsections: matching, association, repetition, naming and spelling.

Exercises are customiseable using personalphotos but there is also an extensive bank of pre-stored items.

Within each subsection, various different exercise types can be chosen e.g. multiple choice, copying, dictation.

The software can be re-programmed on a regular basis by a speech and language therapist in order for it to remain relevant and progress along with the patient. However a client version is also available which doesn't require SLT input.

The exercises themselves can either be updated on the PC or remotely over the internet.

A record keeping facility is built into the software which the therapist can access remotely from her base.

Advantages

  • The software has been underpinned by research (the SLT who developed it has a PhD in this specialist field)
  • Lots of customisation (e.g. number of multiple choice items, choice of cues, format of target words (spoken/written/ pictorial).  use of personal photos.
  • The user only has access to the exercises the therapist wants them to currently work on
  • The software is very easy to use for therapist and client.
  • Cues are provided if the user makes errors, following an 'errorless' learning model.
  • Disadvantages

  • It is not possible to work on sentences or paragraphs (single words only)
  • It is only possible to do naming exercises (e.g. a patient wanting to work on function words would not find this package useful)
