People with Aphasia helping each other to become independent, communicate with other Aphasic people and overcome Aphasia together

Aberdeen, Scotland

'SpeakEasy'

"Speakeasy" was set up following an open day about aphasia.

The first meeting was on 16th November 2000.

Speakeasy is a self-help group for people with aphasia. The group meets once a month in a hotel in Aberdeen. About 12 people usually attend the meetings.

The aims of the group are
- to support each other and boost confidence
- to know you're not the only person with aphasia
- to share experiences
- to have a laugh
- to encourage communication

The meetings have included talks from speakers on a range of topics - some about aphasia and medical aspects, and some of general interest.

Outings have been to various local places of interest. The group holds an annual Burns Lunch and guests are invited.

The group has met with other Speakability groups in Scotland to share ideas and experiences.
