Making information 'aphasia-friendly'
Alex Stirling
I am a Speech and Language Therapist, and work in a large hospital in Liverpool.
Our hospital is looking at the information it gives to patients. This important information might be about an operation, or tablets. Most of this information is long, complicated, and difficult to understand. The hospital is trying to make the information 'friendly' for people with different disabilities. We have joined a Patient Information Group in the hospital to help do this.
We are reading information and making changes;
short sentences simple language pictures bullet points large print
Maybe your local hospital has a Patient Information Group. You might find out by contacting the Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS).PALS support and represent patient views in hospital. Hospital groups like this need a person with aphasia. You might help advise on how to make information 'aphasia- friendly'.
I will let you know how our group gets on
