Learning new skills, re-learning lost skills

The Evesham ABI Education Centre provides education for people who have had a stroke or head injury.

Learning new information following such a trauma is hard and challenging and one of the most difficult things is finding a place to go to relearn those lost skills.

Our centre is based on the site of Evesham College provides a friendly understanding environment in which to learn and more importantly helps people to discover hidden talents.

The courses include art, woodwork, discussion groups, a variety of communication and literacy groups, computer courses and appropriate exercise programmes and a course to help people learn about their brains and its function.

Students work at their own pace, on their own projects and it seems that, without the pressure of having to keep up with the group and not having to take examinations, students relax, lose their anxieties so that ideas thoughts and speech flow more easily.

Students also appreciate the opportunity to meet people who experience similar problems and anxieties around their learning skills and the friendships that develop help to increase self-confidence and the ability to move on in their lives.

The centre is staffed by Tutors, Support assistants and 3 Occupational Therapists. All the O.T's have worked in a variety of roles but specialising in Brain Injuries ranging from acute care to out patients through to community. We provide training, advice and support for other colleges in Worcestershire and for other services involved in the care and support of adults with acquired brain injuries.
